Pownce - advancing Instant Presence

Pownce is being lauded as the latest / greatest "instant presence" tool.  This cross between instant messaging and social networking tools, catalyzed by Twitter, allows authors to send short messages like SMS to their networks. The "always online" functionality will strike the man/woman on the street as too geeky, exposed or even self-obsessed. This is social beta testing, an online experiment in personal transparency. And it's not a one-off concept... Information Week magazine recently reviewed eight more instant presence applications.

Pownce was launched by Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, to some rave reviews from Mashable. Simply put, the distinguishing feature is Pownce's ability to broadcast/share messages, links, files and events to any network or individual, using a simple intuitive interface. Frankly, it's perfect for Facebook and college students.

Pownce is creating launch demand through registration by invitation only. Mashable and Techcrunch notes invites are being sold on eBay, but I have 4 invites to offer to the real estate blogosphere (I checked, I haven't identified anyone from real estate on Pownce)... every new registrant can invite 6 others, so I would expect the hyper involved geeky side of the real estate sector will have a lot of experimenters in short order.

First four respondents... please leave me your email address in comments.

update: Pownce sent me more invites, so contact me if you're interested...

I don't see the point of it yet. Kinda like Twitter seemed pointless. But the extra features seems interesting compared to twitter

I have the same reaction... Twitter didn't make too much sense to me. If you check reviews on Pownce, the easy one-to-many file transfer option seems most attractive. For real estate, instant presence isn't important... one possible example of a real estate IP app might be fielding Q&A on a mapping mashup

the "wife factor" must always be considered in calculating one's "geek factor"... which can be balanced out by the "having two sons" factor.

    Hi Pat,

What do see Pownce being used for with respect to Real Estate? Do you have a large network of Real Estate friends that you would share info with on a near instant basis?

I think Pownce is just another network in the long chain of social networking services... and it doesn't have much application to real estate beyond real time distribution of news and information, say, on offer date. Most new apps are searching for a purpose, so understanding what Pownce (or Facebook or Twitter) might yield an applicaiton, but it may at least enhance an agent's profile as tech-savvy...

Even though pownce looks good on paper, it's going to be hard to give another co-presence app any attention if my network and the conversation is happening over on Twitter.

Also, in addition to creating buzz, I think the private invite thing is aimed more towards avoiding the scaling problems that twitter has been going through recently.

Pat's observations are on the mark. Instant presence is fine but of little utility if not read or noticed at the recieving end. How many people spend their days on the computer in anticipation of some "real estate news" or at least an item of interest to the consumer.

Pat - again, it was great to talk to you last week. Hope your 4th went well.

If you have any of those invites left, could I get one? Thanks.

BTW - great blog! I hope that once I get mine going at our company Web site that it is as good as yours.
