For New Bloggers Only - Seminar Followup
Thanks for coming to our seminar on how to develop your online presence through technology.... here's how you get started:
Blog platforms:
We recommend the best platform to start out with is Wordpress.com, which is hosted on its own Wordpress.com system. Wordpress is the choice of many experienced bloggers, it's open source, it scales with experience, and it's free. Eventually you may want to use the Wordpress.org product on your own domain name, it's similar and more fully featured than the Wordpress.com product. The other widely used blog platform we recommend is Typepad.
Contact us before you invest in a website with its own blogging platform. Sometimes the blog platform is slapped on and not well designed, others are not scalable.
First steps to get started -
1) Set up a Wordpress blog account at www.wordpress.com...name it something simple related to your business , whatever your specialty is... (you can change the name later if you find something better)
2) Once set up, let me know your login and password (make a temporary password " helpyourname" you can change later)
3) Do as much as you can at setup , you should play with the application - try writing posts and pages and notice what happens... mess around... I can go in later and fix things up. Look at my blog - scroll down the left side and see if you like any of the features... you can also add calendars and other sidebar "widgets" (under the presentation tab)...
4) Read my blogger starter series - scroll down the left side of this blog and find it and read the series. This will give you an overview of what to expect...
5) When you have
created 4-5 posts, let me know by meebo (the chat
box on my blog) and I'll come check it...
6) Any questions or comments, please
contact me between 9:00-11:30 pm weekday nights at the meebo chatbox or by
email...
Feedreaders
You'll need at least one feed aggregation reader to subscribe to all the blogs and other web sources you will track as a blogger. I subscribe with Bloglines, but Netvibes and Google Reader work well too - just follow the instructions to register and add blogs you'd like to subscribe too. Check out my abbreviated Netvibes list. Researching blog content daily offers timely ideas for your next post and also confirm popular topics that do not bear repeating. There are many feed aggregators to choose from. Now subscribe to the Transparent feed by clicking on the subscribe button
or here.
Enjoy your new life as a blogger!

Pat, for the dinosaurs, what does "scalable" mean?

Hi Bonnie, (oops, sometimes like email, I thought I replied yesterday, but clicking the "Save: button didn't seem to work) scalable means that as a new blogger begins to advance in the art of t blogging, the platform scales with the progress so the user never outgrows it...

Content is all that really matters. Scalability? heck I don't even know what my page rank is, I just blog for business.

"Content is king" is the message Kevin Boer and I impart to the new bloggers over three seminars the last three days. Teresa, we've been quoting you often and liberally as a great standard in local blogs!

I just switched my site from Advanced Access to a WordPress blog. My ranking jumped quickly from my static pages alone (before I had even written any posts!)
