Recession map
USA Today recession map
USA Today, by way of Moody's Economy.com, published a map that charts the states and their metro areas now in recession.
First, it's predictable that recession and foreclosure incidence go hand in hand... the states hit hardest had the most housing build activity over the past decade. (Why foreclosure hit Bakersfield is still in expansion? I guess it's based on oil...)
Second, 30 states are still in expansion, adding some credibility to Bush's and the Fed's repeated assertions that the US economy may avert a recession.
Nice map. I would have never thought that there were that many states in expansion and that little in recession. Thankfully one of them is mine, TN.

Florida, Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada are in recession red.

Oops California is also in recession - I highlighted it and made it pink...b ut from our vantage point here in Silicon Valley, it doesn't seem severe, but we know any area of California 40+ miles off the coast is Slaughterville...

Amazing map. It really does a great job of illustrating the current economic status of the country as a whole. I found it fascinating how many states are actually in the process of expansion!

This is a very useful map! I am in Nevada and looks like we are as bad as it may get. Of course, most NV stats are heavily influenced by Las Vegas where the bulk of the population is. Notwithstanding Las Vegas, things are definitely "tightened up" in terms of local spending, jobs, etc. - not to mention real estate transaction volume.

Pat: San Diego's margin for Slaughterville is far thinner than 40 miles. Clean margins are gone at about 15 miles from the coast--and some even closer. Beach areas are still very strong.

California should be red... it's pink because I screen captured while scrolling over the state...

Thanks for this clarification. Our market here (very close to the CA border but more heavily influenced by the major CA metros) seems like it would be on the same page with CA.
